چکیده

LI, CHONG, Ph.D., June 2009, Chemical Engineering Effect of Corrosion Inhibitor on Water Wetting and Carbon Dioxide Corrosion In Oil-Water Two-Phase Flow (198 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Srdjan Nesic The internal corrosion of flowlines and pipelines made from carbon steel is encountered in the oil and gas industry. The corrosion process is primarily associated with the presence of free water in offshore or onshore production, particularly when it is accompanied by carbon dioxide gas. Corrosion inhibitor injection in oilfields is a very common and useful method for pipeline internal corrosion prevention. There is a need to understand the physics of phase wetting, carbon dioxide corrosion and the effect of corrosion inhibitor on those two processes in oil-water two-phase flow. In this study, the flow patterns and phase wetting regimes of oil-water two-phase flow were experimentally investigated in a large scale flow loop. Five major flow patterns were observed within the test flow conditions by flow visualization. Three types of phase wetting regimes (water wetting, oil wetting and intermittent wetting) were found by using a carbon steel test section consisting of wall conductance probes, wall sampling and corrosion monitoring. Based on experimental results, phase wetting maps were generated for model oil and five crude oils in the flow loop tests. Following the large scale flow loop tests, a small scale flow apparatus, called a doughnut cell was developed to simulate phase wetting occurring in oil-water two-phase

Water wetting is a crucial issue in carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion of multiphase flow pipelines made from mild steel. This study demonstrates the use of a novel benchtop apparatus, a horizontal rotating cylinder, to study the effect of water wetting on CO2 corrosion of mild steel in two-phase flow. The setup is similar to a standard rotating cylinder except for its horizontal orientation and th...

Experimental Studies of Water Wetting in Large-Diameter Horizontal Oil/Water Pipe Flows

Internal pipeline corrosion in oil production and transportation is always associated with the presence of water, and the likelihood of corrosion generally increases with the volume fraction of water. When the walls of the pipeline are wetted with oil no corrosion is possible. Highly turbulent flow was associated with negligible corrosion due to water entrainment by the flowing oil, whereas low...

09476 - a Study of Factors Affecting Co2 Corrosion and Inhibitor Effectiveness Using a Multi-phase Flowloop

A mini-flowloop was developed to study CO2 corrosion and corrosion/erosion interactions, and to assess the effectiveness of inhibitors under conditions that simulate multi-phase pipelines. The miniflowloop was used to study the effect of testing time, steel chemistry, velocity, temperature, fluid chemistry, sand and inhibitors on corrosion rates. The measured corrosion rates in inhibited and un...

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of CO2 Corrosion

Internal corrosion is a common problem in pipelines transporting oil and gas containing corrosive components such as CO2 and H2S. In many mature oil wells, the water cut and CO2 content may reach high level which forms a suitable environment for initiation and growth of corrosion. To avoid the consequences of corrosion, process parameters should always be controlled within safe operating limits...

Corrosion in Multiphase Flow Containing Small Amounts of H2s

Experiments in a large-scale flow loop provide an example of a somewhat increased corrosion rate under multiphase flow conditions caused by a low concentration of H2S in a CO2 saturated environment. Under operating conditions that prevent scale formation, the addition of 3ppm H2S in the gas phase increased the corrosion rate of AISI C 1018 and API 5L X-65 carbon steels, while the addition of H2...
